A Story of Resilience, Community, and Giving Back

Sometimes a donation carries a story so powerful that it deserves to be shared. Today, we are honored to highlight one such story and one rooted in resilience, community, friendship, and healing.

Cathy, her husband Bill, and their son Sam have been part of the Dirty Hands Project family for the past two years, hiking alongside us and sharing in the spirit of connection and purpose that DHP represents. This past summer, their journey took an unexpected and frightening turn. While riding his scooter in Merrimack, New Hampshire, Bill was involved in a serious (still unexplained) solo accident, crashing into the woods. He has no memory of the accident.  Thankfully, a passerby found him, but his injuries were severe. Bill was airlifted to Boston with critical brain injuries, facial trauma, many broken bones, and significant lung injuries leading to a pulmonary embolism. For a time, he was on life support and his recovery was uncertain, and the situation was truly touch and go.

In response, their community rallied around them in an incredible way, offering support, love, and hope. A GoFundMe campaign was created to help Bill and his family during his recovery, reminding us of the strength that comes from standing together during life’s most difficult moments. Through determination, medical care, and the unwavering support of those around him, Bill made a remarkable recovery, so remarkable that he has been back at work since October, hiking Monadnock & Pack Monadnock most weekends, and even did a cold plunge at Jeness beach recently. He has had a remarkable full recovery minus a few minor issues related to the brain trauma.

As Bill healed, Cathy and her family made a deeply meaningful decision. They chose to donate the remaining funds from the GoFundMe campaign to Dirty Hands Project in honor of Cathy’s best friend, Jessica, who tragically lost her life to in 2019 after a 30-year battle with her mind. This gift is not only a testament to Bill’s recovery, but also a beautiful tribute to friendship, remembrance, and turning pain into purpose.

We are incredibly grateful for this donation and the story behind it. It reflects everything Dirty Hands Project stands for: community, healing through movement, honoring loved ones, and finding light even after the darkest moments. Thank you, Cathy, Bill, and Sam, for trusting us with this story and for continuing to walk and hike alongside us.

Your strength and generosity inspire us all.
